ORLANDO, Fla. --- More than 220 donors have contributed more than $10,000 to a scholarship fund launched to commemorate the 40th birthday of John Crossman CCIM, president of Crossman & Company, the Orlando real estate firm that ranks as one of the largest retail property specialists in the Southeast.
John Crossman said he was delighted with the response.
Crossman launched the scholarship fund to benefit students at Florida State University, the University of Florida and the University of Central Florida as well as more than 20 other colleges throughout the U.S.
“I have been very honored so far by the efforts of my colleagues in the commercial real estate industry,” said Crossman, a frequent speaker at regional and national real estate conferences.
Crossman has focused on improving the real estate programs at colleges and university throughout his professional career. He is a frequent lecturer at Florida State University and the University of Florida.

Avalon Park in East Orlando braces for wave of new development when Innovation Way–S.R. 528 link opens to Medical City
ORLANDO - Avalon Park in east Orlando is bracing for a wave of new commercial development and new jobs when Orange County opens a temporary interchange in May linking the UCF campus and the Innovation Way corridor with S.R. 528, Lake Nona’s Medical City and Orlando International Airport.
Eric Marks, senior vice president and chief operating officer at Avalon Park Group, said Avalon Park is approaching the halfway point of its approved one million square feet of commercial space, and new development resulting from the transportation link could add as much as 550,000 square feet of commercial space at Avalon Park within five to seven years.
“As the middle link between the UCF campus and the UCF College of Medicine, we’re perfectly located to serve both hubs simultaneously,” Marks explained.
“The economic impact in terms of new employment and new development will benefit the entire east Orlando region, and we anticipate an increase in demand within the first year,” he said.
Medical City, which also includes the new V.A. Hospital, Nemours Children’s Hospital and the Burnham Institute for Medical Research, is expected to generate more than 5,000 new jobs over the next five years, including doctors, medical staff, technicians and support workers. Widening Alafaya Trail will begin next June.
Marks said Avalon Park will benefit from two types of commercial users.
“We will see a significant increase in demand for space to serve our existing community,” Marks said. Avalon Park now includes more than 3,500 homes, with a mixed-use downtown district that includes offices, shops and stores, along with condominiums and rental apartments.
“Downtown Avalon Park is a tremendous asset,” Marks said. “The opportunity to walk out of your office building onto a downtown street within a block or two of dozens of restaurants, cafes, shops and stores is very appealing,” he said.
Avalon Park’s equidistance from the UCF campus and Medical City will attract a second group of service businesses and providers that want to serve both markets, Marks added.
“From service businesses such as health care, insurance and legal to primary employers such as software, telecommunications and research and development firms, Avalon Park offers a unique environment,” he said.

CEO Nexus sowing economic gardening seeds statewide
ORLANDO, Fla., - CEO Nexus, the public-private initiative affiliated with the University of Central Florida Business Incubation Program and helps accelerate the growth of second stage companies, is spreading the seeds of “economic gardening” around the state of Florida.
Steve Quello, president of CEO Nexus has been invited to speak across the state on the need and value of economic gardening which has taken root here in central Florida thanks to sponsors such as the Florida High Tech Corridor Council, the Rollins College Center for Advanced Entrepreneurship and the Edward Lowe Foundation, who have embraced the need to mentor second stage companies as an important ingredient of job creation.
Since May, Quello has been spreading his story by addressing economic development commission workshops and public forums in Orange, Lake, Sarasota, Collier, Broward and Citrus counties.
Quello has booked speaking engagements Oct. 7 at the Volusia County EDC, Oct. 28 at the Florida Development Assn. in Orlando and on Nov. 16 at the Pasco County EDC.
“Economic gardening has shown to be a cost-effective complement to the conventional economic development efforts of luring large employers to the area,” Quello said.
The Rollins College Center for Advanced Entrepreneurship is committed to hosting invitation only CEO Nexus forums quarterly – the next set for Dec. 2 – after its first in September was a resounding success.
CEO Nexus pairs principals, CEOs and top executives of second stage companies with highly successful executives in a forum setting to develop practical, hands-on solutions for business development issues.

Stirling Sotheby's International Realty Names Wendy Barin Associate

WINTER PARK, Fla. - The Rollins College Center for Advanced Entrepreneurship in collaboration with CEO Nexus will host the CEO Nexus Forum, part of a program series that brings together leaders of established, second-stage businesses to meet and learn from CEOs who have successfully grown their companies into a more advanced stage of business development.
Cari Coats, newly appointed executive director at the Center for Advanced Entrepreneurship, said Ed Haddock, co-chairman and chief executive officer of Full Sail University, will be the guest speaker at the invitation only event that begins at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 9 in the Crummer Graduate School of Business Bush Executive Center.
The business community and Rollins are embracing and helping to lead the “economic gardening” strategy fostered by CEO Nexus that growing our own local companies is a vital part of job creation.
Providing an opportunity for mentoring the CEOs of often underserved second-stage businesses is a priority not only for the Center for Advanced Entrepreneurship but for the CEOs of successful third and fourth-stage companies who realize the need to invest time in a confidential setting to advise and share growth strategies.
Haddock, along with his two partners and a talented team of executives built Full Sail University into one of the largest and most innovative entertainment, media and arts universities in the world. From the start of Haddock’s involvement in 1991, the school has grown from 300 to 7,700 students and the campus has grown to 190 acres with 801,000 square feet of studios, sound stages, media development and other support facilities.
Haddock and partners also expanded Full Sail’s post-secondary education portfolio to include The Los Angeles Film School, The Los Angeles Recording School and Rocky Mountain College of Art & Design.
Additionally, in 1973 Haddock was a founding partner, serving as chairman and managing partner of the law firm, Swann and Haddock, P.A., which by 1990 became one of Florida’s preeminent law firms. During the 1970s and 1980s Haddock was also a founding principal of financial institutions, insurance underwriting companies, homebuilding companies and real estate developments.
The Sept. 9 Forum is another in a series of events designed for second-stage CEOs and supported by the Rollins College Center for Advanced Entrepreneurship, University of Central Florida’s Office of Research and Commercialization and the Florida High Tech Corridor, said Steve Quello, president of CEO Nexus.
