Del Webb Orlando to Host Relay for Life Fundraiser for American Cancer Society April 28

ORLANDO, Fla. – Residents of Del Webb Orlando, the award-winning active adult community located on Ridgewood Lakes Blvd. in Davenport just south of Orlando, will host Relay for Life, a fundraising event for the American Cancer Society, April 28.

The event is part of an effort by people from 21 countries, including more than four million people in 5,000 communities across the U.S., to spread cancer awareness, celebrate the lives of survivors, remember those who lost their battle with cancer and unite the community to fight against cancer.

“Our relay team will walk between the Montecito Clubhouse and the brand-new model home park for six hours to bring cancer awareness to our community,” Del Webb Orlando resident, Melanie McElvany Hite said.

“Everyone is invited to participate in the relay — as a relayer, bringing food to the pot luck dinner, volunteering to handout water, light the luminaries or cheering the relayers on throughout the day,” she said.

The Del Webb Orlando relay team has raised almost $2,000 through individual donations, aluminum can recycling, 50/50 raffles and sales of food and drinks at community events.

Money raised through relay events goes to research grants and programs, prevention programs, community/patient support programs, detection and treatment programs, management, fundraising, and construction of Hope Lodges.

“We’ve been very successful raising money for ACS and now it’s time to put the shoe leather to Del Webb Blvd.,” Hite said.

Participants in the event include residents from many of the clubs at Del Webb Orlando. Several Del Webb Orlando clubs focus on health and wellness, like the Steps to Fitness Club and the Losers are Winners Club. With over 15 chartered clubs to choose from and even more small groups, the activities are endless and there is always an opportunity to reach out to make a difference in the community—In this instance, raising awareness and uniting to fight cancer.

Del Webb Orlando features world class health and wellness amenities that are all part of the lifestyle — numerous activities, pastimes, hobbies and events that make life worth living. These are administered by a full time lifestyle director and community association manager.
