MOUNT DORA, Fla. – First Green Bank, the Lake County-based bank that ranks as one of the greenest banks in the U.S., was recently named one of the best places to work in the U.S. by a national publication — Outside Magazine.
Kenneth LaRoe, chairman and chief executive officer of First Green Bank, said the bank ranked among the magazines’ Top 100 Best Places to Work.
Outside’s “Best Places to Work” project celebrates a new standard for a healthy work-life balance. The list was compiled with the help of the Outdoor Industry Association and Best Companies Group.
The year long selection process began with the outreach efforts that identified a wide range of non-profit and for-profit organizations with at least 15 employees working in an office in the United States.
Participating companies were sent confidential employee-satisfaction surveys and employer-questionnaires to collect information about benefits, compensation, policies, job satisfaction, environmental initiatives and community outreach programs. Outside Magazine secretly interviewed all the bank’s 52 workers.
The experts at the Best Companies then analyzed the results and selected the companies that best enable employees to pursue active lifestyles while also supporting their social and environmental contributions.
LaRoe said First Green Bank plans to open a new branch facility in Downtown Orlando this year and a location in Winter Park next year.
Outside Magazine is published in Santa Fe, New Mexico and has a circulation well over 600,000.

Volusia County Council Officially Proclaims July 27 as Entrepreneur Day
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Exactly one year after the grand opening of the University of Central Florida Business Incubation Program at the Daytona Beach International Airport, UCF officials and the Volusia County Council celebrated with the official proclamation of July 27 as “Entrepreneur Day” in Volusia County.
The anniversary of opening in the 9,600 square-foot facility last year with only one client, combined stories of success and the realization of nearly a dozen new clients, including one who received the Daytona Incubator’s Entrepreneur-of-the-Year Award.
Volusia County is the only county in Florida that has a designated an Entrepreneur Day, according to Connie Bernal, site manager of the Daytona Beach location.
Highlights of the recent event, which was attended by more than 250 people, also included speeches by Volusia County Council Chairman, University officials and other local dignitaries; the website launch of an incubator client, Best3Bids; recognition of the incubator’s Entrepreneur of the Year; and reading of the County Council’s proclamation.
The proclamation, which was signed by all council members and read by Volusia County Chairman Frank Bruno, referred to entrepreneurs as the “engine” of the local and national economy for translating their “vision into products and services that keep America strong.” It also said they deserve “appreciation for helping to improve our local economy.”
Featured speakers were Frank Bruno, chairman of the Volusia County Council; Rick Karl, director of Volusia County’s Aviation and Economic Resources; Dr. Thomas O’Neal, executive director and founder of the UCF Business Incubation Program (UCFBIP); Gordon Hogan, director of the UCFBIP; and Connie Bernal, site manager of the UCF Business Incubator at Daytona Beach International Airport.
Bernal said the past year has been an eventful one with new clients like Robert Skelton, owner of Best iProducts™.com LLC, coming up with new and exciting ideas and products. Skelton received the Entrepreneur of the Year award for his creation of the iEraser®, The Ultimate Screen Cleaning Device, a pocketsize rectangular cleaning device that removes fingerprints and smudges from glossy glass screens, tablet and laptop computers and flat screen TVs with a few swipes.
“The one-year anniversary event was a huge success. The incubator clients, Volusia County Economic Development, and the Volusia County business community really showed their entrepreneurial spirit. We all worked together as a team to make it happen. Teamwork creates a positive mental attitude, which does not recognize obstacles, she said.
The Daytona Beach incubator is a partnership between UCF, Volusia County and the Florida High Tech Corridor Council. In its 13th year, the program offers a supportive environment designed to inspire the entrepreneurial spirit, accelerate business growth and create local employment opportunities.
Earlier this year, Volusia County began talking about an additional incubator in West Volusia along the Interstate 4 corridor. Supporters of a West Volusia incubator say the county’s second incubator is needed because of the division between east and west Volusia.
“This event was a true celebration of entrepreneurship in this community,” said Dr. O'Neal. "The support from this community is the reason the incubator is doing so well already and will continue to do so in the future."
About the UCF Business Incubation Program
Since its founding in 1999, the UCF Business Incubation Program has helped more than 200 emerging companies (including more than 134 current clients) create over $363 million in annual total economic output and more than 3,120 new jobs (taking direct and indirect and induced impact into account) with an average salary of $59,000. With ten facilities across the Greater Orlando community, the Business Incubation Program is a collaboration in economic development among the University of Central Florida, Orange County, the City of Orlando, Seminole County, the City of Apopka, the City of Winter Springs, the City of Sanford, Lake County, the City of Leesburg, Osceola County, the City of Kissimmee, City of St. Cloud, Volusia County and the Florida High Tech Corridor Council. Lennar Opens New Energy-Efficient Production Home at Hawks Point in Ruskin
TAMPA, Fla. -- Lennar’s Central Florida Division has opened a new EcoSmart model home at Hawks Point in Ruskin that’s sure to open a few eyes in the Tampa Bay area.
Mark Metheny, president of Lennar’s Central Florida Division, said the St. Tropez model home at Hawks Point was designed as an exhibit to showcase the EcoSmart’s engineering, design and construction techniques.
Visitors will actually be able to see behind the walls, view the energy efficient components and see how a Lennar home is built, Metheny said.
The two-story St. Tropez model home offers five bedrooms and three-and-a-half baths in 2,272 square feet of living space with a two-car garage, all priced from just $173,990.
But Lennar’s EcoSmart features are what make the St. Tropez special. The all-new engineering, design, construction and equipment standards make easy living a lot more affordable.
Metheny said Lennar’s EcoSmart homes will make history as one of the most energy-efficient new production homes in the Tampa Bay region.
Available in all 18 Lennar communities in the Tampa Bay region, Lennar’s EcoSmart homes offer eight major engineering, design, construction and equipment features that exceed building codes and result in the most energy-efficient homes by any major home builder in Florida, Metheny said.
The St. Tropez model home at Hawks Point offers such features as the new Lennox 15-SEER high-efficiency HVAC system designed for Florida’s climate; Energy Star-rated GE Appliances, the new GE GeoSpring Hybrid Water Heater, and the LP TechShield Heat Barrier that prevents 97 percent of the sun’s heat from entering the attic.
All new homes Lennar builds in the Tampa Bay region feature the RESNET Home Energy Ratings System (HERS) Index.
“Our HERS Index ratings compare our energy efficiency to a typical existing home in the region as determined by the U.S. Department of Energy,” Metheny said.
“As one of the nation’s leading home builders, we always look for ways to improve the energy efficiency and environmental safety and security of the homes we build,” Metheny said.

University of Central Florida Business Incubator Client Feted at Daytona Beach One-Year Anniversary Celebration
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Robert Skelton, the founder and chief executive officer of Best iProducts™.com LLC, was recognized Friday by the University of Central Florida Business Incubation Program as “Entrepreneur of the Year” for the Daytona Beach International Airport incubator.
Skelton, the creator of the iEraser®: The Ultimate Screen Cleaning Device® received a plaque and recognition during the one-year anniversary of the airport incubator site. Best iProducts has a manufacturing facility in Edgewater and operates its design studio at the airport location.
Referring to himself as iRob, the inventor received rave reviews when he introduced his product at the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January, according to Connie Bernal, site manager at the Daytona Beach incubator.
Bernal said “Skelton is an entrepreneur who works hard to make his city, his county, his country and the world a better place for all of us to live. He has all the potential for creating a successful high-growth company in Volusia County.”
The iEraser®, a pocketsize rectangular screen cleaning device, removes fingerprints from any kind of glossy glass computer screen with a few easy swipes. Because the invention was such a hit at the recent electronics show, Skelton secured a space triple the size he had this year for the 2013 show. For details, visit www.BestiProducts.com or www.TheiEraser.com.
“I’m very flattered and honored to be named Entrepreneur of the Year for this UCF Business Incubator location. It could not have happened without the help of many, especially our team of iPeople and the grace of God,” said Skelton after receiving the Entrepreneur of the Year award.
The incubator is a partnership between UCF, Volusia County and the Florida High Tech Corridor Council. It is designed to help start-up companies as well as established businesses that may need assistance getting to the next level of their operations, Bernal said.
