Del Webb Southshore Falls Homeowner Bruce Davis Vaulted to Gymnastics Fame, Now Trains Youngsters

APOLLO BEACH, Fla. --- Del Webb Southshore Falls homeowner Bruce Davis is a noted author, lecturer and gymnastics trainer whose life long passion got its start thanks to the guidance of his sister – three-time Olympian Muriel Grossfeld – in Indianapolis.

Now Davis and his wife Rita have owned and operated FlipFlops & Fitness at 328 Apollo Beach Blvd. in Apollo Beach for the past 11 years, and Davis is still paying back his famous sister.

Though he competed in college at South Connecticut State University in New Haven, Davis never made the Olympic team, the Holy Grail of gymnasts. But he’s done the next best thing---training Olympians and inspiring thousands more to excel in gymnastics.

Flip Flops & Fitness is located just five minutes from their Del Webb Southshore Falls home, one of the many advantages of the active adult neighborhood.

“We love our neighbors, I’d have to say that’s the biggest appeal at Del Webb Southshore Falls,” Davis said.

At FlipFlops & Fitness, the Davises offer children from preschool to teens training in gymnastics and tumbling geared for competition and cheerleading. He conducts 21 classes a week with 4-8 children in each class.

Davis, who earned his Bachelors Degree in Health and Physical Education from SCSU and a Masters Degree from Ohio University at the age of 21, taught and coached at Miami-Dade Community College North Campus for 33 years before retiring as Professor Emeritus in 1999.

While teaching in Miami, Davis opened Gymiami, a private gymnastics school, where he trained Olympian Kurt Thomas and national team member Cathy Shotwell. He took a one-year leave from Miami-Dade to pursue another passion as the managing editor for International Gymnastics magazine further wetting his appetite for gymnastics journalism

He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the World Acrobatics Society and is an internationally recognized authority on gymnastics.

The Davises were drawn to Del Webb Southshore Falls by the upscale features and barrel tile roofs and the fact that all homes are built to meet or exceed the tough Miami-Dade code.

“We enjoy our home at Del Webb Southshore Falls very much and appreciate the PulteGroup for putting it here,” Davis said.

Margie and Richard Trostheim of Cedar Falls, Iowa Feted as 500th Home Buyer at Del Webb Southshore Falls in Apollo Beach

APOLLO BEACH, Fla. – Margie and Richard Trostheim of Cedar Falls, Iowa, were recently feted as the 500th home buyers at Del Webb Southshore Falls, the historic active adult community located at Shell Falls Drive in Apollo Beach.

The soon-to-be retired couple plans to move into their new home at Del Webb Southshore Falls in July, said Sean Strickler, vice president of sales and marketing for the Central Florida division of Del Webb Communities.

Richard Trostheim is retiring from a career as custodial supervisor at the University of Northern Iowa and Margie is retiring from the same university where she has been a clerk for many years. Del Webb Southshore Falls appealed to them for the warm weather and nearby golf.
“We have been looking forward to this for many years,” the Trostheims said.

For the Trostheims, the safety features, planned activities and friendly neighbors proved an irresistible lure.

“There is something interesting to do every day and the home owners we met here are friendly, happy and engaging,” Mrs. Trostheim said. “We have already met friends and we are looking forward to being neighbors,” she said.
