WINTER SPRINGS - Paul Partyka, Democratic candidate for Congress in Florida’s 24th District, has been talking with voters every day for the past three months in his bid to unseat the district’s freshman incumbent in the Aug. 24 primary election and then a Republican opponent in November.
His conversations have taught him a valuable lesson.
“The biggest concerns voters have in District 24 are issues, Partyka said. “We Americans face tremendous challenges as a nation, and politicians who focus on fear, hatred, mud-slinging and back-biting are going to see that backfire,” he said.
Partyka said his focus on policy issues gives him the edge over incumbent Suzanne Kosmas.
“The four most important issues in District 24 are jobs, the economy, health care and immigration,” Partyka said, “and the incumbent has done nothing but waffle on any of them.”
Partyka said his campaign has focused exclusively on policy issues since he decided to run for Congress last year.
“I won’t attack the integrity of the incumbent,” Partyka said, “nor can she attack mine. We are both honorable people. In District 24, the question comes down to, ‘what have you done for the people of Florida?’ And she has failed in that regard.”
“The only way we are going to get our nation moving forward again is to elect representatives who will act. So far as we can tell, the incumbent has spent most of her energies protecting her seat. That’s not what District 24 wants,” Partyka said, “and that’s not what the nation needs.”
Partyka said he decided to run for office because he is frustrated by political do-nothings.
“I hate posturing,” Partyka said. “America needs action, not poise. We need a lot more pushing and pulling and a lot less primping and posing,” he said.
Partyka said his campaign--called a long-shot by some observers--will create some ripples come Aug. 24.
“The voters are going to surprise the pundits and the party elite,” Partyka said. “While the professional politicians have focused on style, the voters are looking at substance, and that’s where we win,” he said.

Democrat Paul Partyka to Debate Incumbent Suzanne Kosmas for Nomination in 24th District Congressional Race
WINTER SPRINGS - Paul Partyka, Democratic candidate for Congress in Florida’s 24th District (http://www/PaulPartykaforCongress.com), announced he will debate incumbent Suzanne Kosmas on Saturday, Aug. 21 at United Church of Christ in New Smyrna Beach.
The debate will start at 6 p.m., Partyka said.
Partyka, former two-term mayor of Winter Springs, said he is pleased that Kosmas, after 62 days, has finally accepted his challenge to meet face-to-face before the voters.
But is not pleased that the debate will take place after early voting.
“The voters deserve to hear a debate between both candidates before they make their decision,” Partyka said. “As candidates for the office, we owe the voters of District 24 the opportunity to make a decision based on the issues,” Partyka said. “That is why I am urging early voters to wait until after the debate even though it may cause some inconvenience. It is not fair to the voters that the congresswoman picked this late date.”
“There are strong and important differences between us,” Partyka said. “I am confident that voters who hear the debate will see the differences and vote accordingly,” he added.

Minority Voters Could Swing the Congressional Election in District 24, Says Congressional Candidate Paul Partyka
WINTER SPRINGS - Minority voters could make the difference in the Democratic primary race for Congress in District 24, which includes much of Seminole and east Volusia counties.
Paul Partyka, the former Winter Springs mayor who is a candidate for the Democratic nomination in District 24, said minority votes could put him over the top in his race against incumbent Suzanne Kosmas.
“Clearly, my positions are more closely aligned with the goals and aspirations of most minority voters in the 24th District,” Partyka said. “The big question is, how many minority voters will go to the polls for the primary election on Aug. 24?”
Partyka said the election of President Obama two years ago proved once and for all that increasingly influential minority communities across America can make their voices heard with powerful effect.
“If we want to build an American national government that is truly for the people and not weighted to favor the richest Americans, then it takes all of the people,” Partyka said.
“If we are to make America whole again, we have to come together as one nation, put aside our partisan differences and seek out our common interests, which are many,” Partyka said.
“Issues such as racial profiling, the 14th Amendment, the Arizona immigration law and hundreds of others are all fabricated to drive us apart,” Partyka said. “We can’t let smoke-and-mirrors manipulation of the American political process distract us from our sacred duty to fulfill the promise of America’s founders---a nation where, in practice as well as in words, all of us are created equal,” Partyka said.

Congressional Candidate Paul Partyka Vows to Support Congressional Term Limits
WINTER SPRINGS - The era of professional career politicians must come to a close if America is to regain its position as the leader of the free world, says Paul Partyka, Democratic candidate for Congress in Florida’s 24th District.
“America’s greatness as a society was built on the moral integrity of its citizens, not its politicians,” Partyka said.
“Every day, we are entertained by new allegations of political misfeasance, immorality and corruption, and we have come to expect that as normal,” Partyka said. “It isn’t normal. It’s an abomination and we should not stand for it,” he said.
Term limits are a powerful tool to assure that political influence is shared by many Americans and not just a few, Partyka said. “I voted for term limits when I was a city commissioner for Winter Springs, and that is still in place today,” Partyka added.
“Most Americans I know are disgusted by the American political landscape,” Partyka said. “How can we be proud of our nation when our nation’s leaders are so ineffectual?” he said.
“Government office is a sacred privilege and a public service. Those who would use it as a power base to reward their friends and benefactors have turned their backs on the ideals that made America great,” Partyka said. “We should vote them out of office, and term limits will make it harder for their kind to influence our government in the future,” he said.

Congressional Candidate Paul Partyka Supports Audit of The Federal Reserve, “Truth Commission” on American Economy
WINTER SPRINGS - Paul Partyka, Democratic candidate for Congress in Florida’s 24th District, said he fully supports an independent audit of the U.S. Federal Reserve and would go one step further to create a public “Truth Commission” to learn how the American economy collapsed and who was at fault.
“We are recovering from the worst economic disaster since the Great Depression and unemployment is the highest it has been in generations,” Partyka said. “It is apparent that we will endure unacceptably high unemployment for many years to come, at a tremendous cost all of us will have to shoulder in the form of higher taxes and fewer career opportunities,” he said.
“All told, the cost of the American economic collapse is far greater than the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11. Millions of Americans have lost their jobs. Millions of American families are losing their homes. Millions of American lives have been disrupted. This is not part of a naturally-occurring economic cycle. We need to learn how it came about, who was at fault, and how we can prevent it from ever occurring again,” Partyka said.
Partyka said he fears that financial industry reform measures currently proposed will not go far enough.
“Petty partisanship and ill-informed political ideology are polluting our nation’s financial reform efforts and what appears to be emerging now will do little to prevent future recessions,” Partyka said.
“We need strong leadership in Washington, and we need representatives who put the people first, not the speculators and the profiteers. I want to provide that leadership,” Partyka said.

Congressional Candidate Paul Partyka Slams BP for Slow Response to Gulf Oil Disaster, Urges Long Term Solutions
WINTER SPRINGS - Paul Partyka, Democratic candidate for Congress in Florida’s 24th District, said oil giant BP must be held responsible for the Gulf oil disaster and criticized company officials for their handling of the crisis.
“I believe BP’s strategy was designed to save their oil well, not the Gulf of Mexico, not the environment, not the fisheries, not the rookeries, not the beaches, and not the thousands of American families who will suffer from this disaster for the next generations,” Partyka said.
“It is clear that BP’s estimates of the oil flow rate were ridiculously low, and it is just as clear that their initial efforts were to control the flow and not to shut it down. Now, we have to pay the price for their strategy,” he said.
“The ultimate cost of this strategy will be borne by American families for generations to come. BP’s calculations were wholly economic, wholly self-serving, and we Americans will pay a far greater price than BP can ever compensate,” Partyka said.
America’s growing dependence on non-sustainable energy sources set the stage for the Gulf oil disaster, Partyka said.
“We are the world’s greatest energy consumer and the world is approaching peak oil capacity,” Partyka said. “If we continue this course we will eventually find ourselves at war with the rest of the world over oil,” he said.
“I believe America deserves a more honorable destiny. I believe America can lead the world toward cleaner, safer, more sustainable energy sources that mean prosperity for all Americans, and for the rest of the world as well. The way ahead will not be easy, but it is the right way, and our present course leads ultimately to disaster,” Partyka said.
“We have the resources to end our energy dependence,” Partyka said. “We have the technology.
We must have the will. America has a moral obligation to end our addiction to oil. That is our future, it is our children’s future, and it is the only honorable future for America,” he said.

VOLUSIA COUNTY LAW FIRM HOSTS BENEFIT FOR JUDICIAL CANDIDATE
PORT ORANGE – Allan L. Ziffra, president of the Port Orange-based law firm of Rue & Ziffra, recently hosted a benefit for Joe Horrox, a civil and criminal attorney who has entered the race for the state’s 7th Judicial Circuit Court.
The May 16 event – which included a barbecue dinner, live music, and a host of children’s activities – drew more than 100 Horrox supporters, according to Assistant Campaign Manager Rhonda Hodges.
“We had very good representation from the legal community,” Hodges said. “And, because of it, we were able to schedule even more fundraisers.”
The next event will be hosted by Attorney Greg Snell on Thursday, June 24 at Snell Legal in Ormond Beach, and Attorney Ted Doran is planning a similar event for later this summer, Hodges said. More details are available from www.joeforjudge.com.
Horrox, 47, who has practiced law in the circuit for more than 23 years, most recently was in practice with Attorney Jonathan Glugover. Prior to that, he was a partner at Rue & Ziffra.
If successful in his quest for the judgeship, Horrox will succeed retiring Flagler County Circuit Judge Kim Hammond.
“We’re happy to be able to show our support for Joe during his campaign,” Ziffra said. “The people of the circuit will be well served with a qualified and experienced attorney such as Joe Horrox as their judge,” he added.

Congressional Candidate Paul Partyka: Recent Supreme Court Ruling an Assault on American Values
WINTER SPRINGS - The recent Supreme Court decision regarding corporate spending on political campaigns is a direct assault on American values that flies in the face of common sense and diminishes the rights of every American, said former Winter Springs Mayor Paul Partyka, a commercial real estate executive who is running for the Democratic nomination to the U.S. Congress in Florida’s 24th District.
“I don’t believe the ruling will stand,” Partyka said. “I believe we Americans---Democrats, Republicans, Independents, Libertarians, all of us---will change it. The question is how much damage to the American cause will we endure before we can undo this?”
“It will be harder for individuals to challenge incumbents now since much of the corporate money will go to support them,” Partyka said.
“The ruling overturns decades of precedent and practice. Common sense says there is a difference between the First Amendment rights of people and those of corporations and special interest groups,” Partyka said.
“I agree with what Justice John Paul Stevens said in his dissenting opinion,” Partyka said.
“Corporations are different because they “have no consciences, no beliefs, no feelings, no thoughts, nor desires. “…They are not themselves members of “We the People” by whom and for whom our Constitution was established.”
Partyka said that if he is elected, he will work on campaign finance reform.
“This ruling cannot stand, it will not stand,” Partyka said. “The people of the United States---Democrats, Republicans, Independents, all of us---will control our government, not the corporations and special interest groups.

Central Florida Congressional Candidate Paul Partyka on Record in Favor of Fair Districts

WINTER SPRINGS, Fla. --- Former two-term Winter Springs Mayor Paul Partyka, a candidate for the Democratic Party nomination for U.S. Congress in Florida’s 24th District, says he favors the “Fair Districts” congressional apportionment plan proposed by FairDistricts.org, a non-partisan citizens group.
“The purpose of fair districts is to draw congressional district lines as practically and compactly as possible without hurting minority groups,” Partyka said.
“Fair districts is the logical way of establishing congressional representation for our communities, insulated from the whims of political fortune,” Partyka said.
“Our congressional representatives should be able to travel their districts efficiently and represent all their constituents, not just the population centers, interest groups and party organizations,” he said.
“Our congressional representatives should be able to travel their districts efficiently and represent all their constituents, not just the population centers, interest groups and party organizations,” he said.
“Without fair districts, we have regular political distortions that aren’t fair to anyone,” he said.
Partyka said gerrymandering---the practice of drawing district lines to favor the political party that holds the majority of seats in the state legislature---is an outmoded policy that should be disbanded.

“Gerrymandering should have no role in good government and the democratic process,” Partyka said. “We Americans know how to govern ourselves, and we should be able to do that without the interference of imbalanced districts,” he said.
