March Silent Auction and Cocktail Party to Benefit Volusia/Flagler Animal Rescue Group

ORMOND BEACH – The 3rd annual Spring Cocktail Party and Silent Auction, a benefit for the Rescued Hearts Animal Shelter, will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, March 19 at the Ormond Lakes Clubhouse on Ormond Lakes Boulevard.

The event will feature cocktails, savory appetizers and tempting desserts on the lake view deck. But, the highlight will be a silent auction of artwork, unique gifts and other items donated by local businesses and individuals, according to newly-elected president Julie Beard.

“We’re very excited to host this event again this year,” Beard said. “We have lots of interesting items that will be on display for those planning to bid on a great item while they help support animal welfare.”

Beard said the event is a large part of the group’s annual fundraising efforts to purchase land to build the Rescued Hearts Animal Shelter and Spay/Neuter Hospital.

The 501C(3) non-profit agency organized in 2007 to help find homes for animals in Volusia and Flagler counties and places dogs and cats in foster homes until they are adopted or until their “state-of-the-art-with-heart” shelter is built.

The agency’s short-term plan is to obtain land in Volusia County and construct a facility to help decrease local government’s cost to house or euthanize unwanted animals.

Other goals are to establish an aggressive spay/neuter program, help animals stay at home to prevent the need for housing, and provide superior care and quality of life for animals.

Tickets for the event are $25 per person and all proceeds will be designated for the group’s Property Acquisition Fund. Reservations can be made by calling Judy Thompson at 386-252-1050.

GROWING VOLUSIA LAW FIRM EXPANDS WEST…TO OFFICE BUILDING NEXT DOOR

PORT ORANGE – The personal-injury law firm of Rue & Ziffra, P.A. recently moved about one-half of its staff into a 6,000-square-foot office building adjacent to its original office at 623 Dunlawton Ave.

The two-story building on 1½ acres at 640 Dunlawton Ave., was purchased late last year for $600,000 from the Sunshine State Community Bank, according to firm President Allan L. Ziffra.

Ziffra said he had planned to build a new office because his staff of 40 was so crammed into their existing 7,000-square-foot building. But, he changed his mind when the 26-year-old former medical/real estate building next door became available through foreclosure.

“We renovated the building to add two additional conference rooms and accommodate about 24 people in four departments: Social Security, worker’s compensation, medical malpractice and litigation,” Ziffra said.

In addition to giving the staff more breathing space, Ziffra said the expansion also will provide attorneys and other staff members more privacy when meeting with their clients.

The building is the third office operated by the 25-year-old Port Orange-based law firm, as they opened an Orange City office at 2790 Enterprise Road in February of 2009.

Stirling Sotheby’s International Realty Hopes Speed Week in Daytona Beach could be Big Opportunity for Area Realtors

ORLANDO, Fla. --- Stirling Sotheby’s International Realty hopes Speed Week in Daytona Beach could be a big opportunity for area Realtors. The Stirling Sotheby’s firm has marshaled a team of luxury home specialist’s who plan to present their credentials to NASCAR owners and drivers arriving for the big race.

Roger Soderstrom, founder and owner of Stirling Sotheby’s International Realty, said NASCAR owners and drivers represent a major market opportunity for the Daytona Beach area.

Rachel McGrath and Debbie Keilin, international luxury home specialist with Stirling Sotheby’s International Realty, hope to capitalize on their personal endorsement from NASCAR icon Mike Skinner during the event.

“Many of the NASCAR owners and drivers fly their own airplanes,” Keilin said. “They can live anywhere, and the Daytona Beach area really is one of the best places in America for them to own a home,” she said.

“Market conditions in the Daytona Beach region couldn’t be better,” McGrath added.

“Luxury home prices are at their lowest in more than a decade and there are incredible values here.” McGrath said. “This window of opportunity won’t last long,” she added.

Rachel McGrath and Debbie Keilin represent Stirling Sotheby’s International Realty in the Volusia County area.

Central Florida’s five-year market decline has left prices down 40-60 percent from the market high and many home sellers have held off placing their homes on the market hoping for a recovery.

“Pricing stabilization has taken a long time, and price increases won’t be realized until sometime in the future,” Keilin said. “Home sellers who are holding off waiting for better market conditions may miss out on the greatest buying opportunity if they are looking to purchase a new residence,” she said.

While sellers may realize a lower price than they might hope for, they also have the opportunity to acquire another residence for much less than they could before.

“The market is adjusting and today we are at the point where we have a new pricing normal,” McGrath explained.

“Real estate remains a neighborhood business. Some neighborhoods with homes less distressed are performing better than other neighborhoods. Property owners who are selling in today’s market and repurchasing are finding themselves in a win-win situation,” she added.

American Soda Blast Company to Blast its Way into the Hearts of Car Enthusiasts at Annual Turkey Run Car Show in Daytona Beach

APOPKA - For classic car enthusiasts, the annual Thanksgiving weekend Turkey Run Nov. 25-28 at Daytona International Speedway is a dream come true---hundreds of acres devoted to showcasing museum-quality classic cars that date from the turn of the century to recent times.

For car owners, the annual Turkey Run is a huge outdoor market for hard-to-get parts, accessories and services. And that’s where American Soda Blast Company plans to shine---literally.

“We’ve established a Turkey Run exhibit that’s going to catch everyone’s eye,” said Michael Young, founder and president of the company.

American Soda Blast technology cleans and strips old paint, and blemishes from car bodies using pressurized sodium bicarbonate.

The process replaces traditional sanding and sand blasting that scores, gouges or warps sheet metal surfaces. The kinder, gentler stripping process is especially important for cars that may be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, Young said.

The biodegradable blast material is a food grade product and won’t harm the underlying metal.
“Sodium bicarbonate is one of the most common compounds found in nature, and does not heat up the metal during blasting like sand will.” Young said.

Scientists used the soda stripping process to restore the Statue of Liberty in the 1980s, Young said. Modern emphasis on green technology solutions has brought the process into vogue.- 30 -

Poker Run Sponsored By Volusia County Law Firm Raises Nearly $5,000 For Local Mom Diagnosed With Cancer

PONCE INLET – More than 100 motorcycle enthusiasts participated in a recent poker run sponsored by the law firm of Rue & Ziffra as a fundraiser for a mother of two who was diagnosed with brain cancer.

The event – which kicked off Aug. 14 at the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse and included a classic car show and a barbecue dinner – raised $4,500 for the family of Lorraine Metakes of Port Orange.

Robin Fenwick, one of four organizers of the fundraiser, said 137 hands of poker were sold to motorcycle drivers, their passengers and others who participated in cars.

“We never expected to be able to give the family this much help with their expenses,” she said.

“When we started out, we thought we’d be lucky to make $500.”

Fenwick said more than $1,000 was from raffle tickets for donated items. The rest came from the sale of poker hands, food, T-shirts and from other donations.

“We know that we couldn’t have done it without the help of Rue & Ziffra,” she added. “After they got the word out in the newspapers and on the radio, my phone was ringing off the hook about the ride.”

Ormond Beach Outback Fundraiser Raises More Than $1,300 for Rescued Hearts Animal Shelter

ORMOND BEACH – More than 200 animal lovers attended a recent luncheon at the Ormond Beach Outback Restaurant and raised some $1,300 that will be used to build a “state-of-the-art-with-a-heart” facility for the Rescued Hearts Animal Shelter Inc.

“We couldn’t believe that the restaurant was packed at both sittings,” said Amy Wade-Carotenuto, the animal group’s founder and executive director.

In addition to Rescued Hearts’ members and volunteers, Wade-Carotenuto said many others from throughout Volusia and Flagler counties attended the June 12 luncheon.

“We made lots of new friends and we even signed up a few new members who wanted to help our cause,” she added.

Some of those who showed up got into the spirit by donning fuzzy rabbit or dog ears, or bringing along stuffed snakes and monkeys.

Two lucky diners took home floral arrangements featuring a dog made of white carnations that was donated by The flower Market in Ormond Beach and raffled off by Rescued Hearts.

Because the event was so successful, Wade-Carotenuto said she and restaurant owner Jason Luj have scheduled a second fund-raising luncheon for Nov. 13 at his Granada Boulevard location.

“The management and staff did a wonderful job hosting and we’re really looking forward to working with them again,” she said.

Rescued Hearts is a 501C(3) non-profit agency that organized in 2007 with a goal of helping animals in Volusia and Flagler counties.

Wade-Carotenuto said the group’s goal is to purchase land in west Volusia to build an animal shelter and spay/neuter hospital that will “never turn away any animal.”

UCF, Volusia County, to Launch Business Incubation Program at Daytona Beach International Airport Complex

ORLANDO - Volusia County plans to partner with the University of Central Florida to launch a University of Central Florida Business Incubation site before the end of this year at the Daytona Beach International Airport complex in Daytona Beach.

Dr. Tom O’Neal, founder and executive director of the UCF Business Incubation Program, said UCF and Volusia County have entered into an agreement to jointly develop the facility that the UCF Business Incubation Program will manage.

Business incubation programs help promising startup enterprises accelerate their growth, while creating employment, local tax revenues and substantial economic impact, Dr. O’Neal explained.

Since 1999, the UCF Business Incubation Program has helped more than 140 emerging companies create more than $800 million in annual revenues and more than 1,600 new jobs with an average salary of $59,000.

Currently, the UCF Business Incubation Program manages eight Business Incubation facilities in Orlando, St. Cloud, Kissimmee, Leesburg, Sanford and Winter Springs.
