ORLANDO, Fla. --- Fire bans in 17 Central Florida counties won’t affect the gala fireworks celebration planned at Avalon Park in east Orlando on July 4.
Stephanie Hodson, marketing director at Avalon Park Group, said every precaution has been taken to assure the safety of the fireworks celebration in Downtown Avalon Park and county and fire officials have given their go-ahead for the evening’s event.
Hodson said Avalon Park expects record crowds for its ninth annual Fourth of July celebration, slated for 5 to 9 p.m. in Downtown Avalon Park.
Family friendly activities will include more than 100 vendors, an apple pie bake-off sponsored by Davis Bakery and a bike parade sponsored by Eastside Cycling and the Avalon Park YMCA; live community performances, a hot dog eating contest sponsored by Pop Pop’s Ice Cream & More, a home run derby sponsored by Brianto’s Original Hoagies and Avalon Park Baseball, and special 3D glasses sponsored by Avalon Town Center Realty to view the fireworks display scheduled to start at 9 p.m.
The event will include a special ceremony honoring fallen Soldier Cpl. Patrick Deans, who was killed in Afghanistan in December. Deans, a graduate of Timber Creek High School, was a member of the Timber Creek Junior ROTC.
Admission to the event is free and parking is ample, Hodson said. Guests are advised to arrive early and bring blankets and folding chairs.
“We anticipate a big crowd,” Hodson said.

Avalon Park Fourth of July Celebration to Honor Timber Creek High School Grad killed in Afghanistan
ORLANDO, Fla. --- Avalon Park’s 9th annual Fourth of July celebration, which is expected to draw record crowd to Downtown Avalon Park for fireworks, games, exhibitions and family-friendly entertainment, will include a solemn memorial to honor the memory of U.S. Army Corporal Patrick D. Deans, who was killed in Afghanistan on Dec. 12, 2010.
Deans, a graduate of Timber Creek High School in Avalon Park, who served in the high school’s junior ROTC program, was a member of the United States Army, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, headquartered at Ft. Campbell, Ky.
Stephanie Hodson, marketing director at Avalon Park Group, said Deans was killed along with five of his fellow soldiers when a minibus loaded with an estimated 1,000 pounds of explosives got past an Afghan security point near a joint NATO-Afghan outpost in the Kandahar province, exploded just outside of a building where the soldiers were gathered. The blast collapsed the building, killed six American soldiers and wounded 11.
Hodson said the memorial service, which will begin at 8:45 p.m. just before the fireworks exhibition, will include presentation of colors, the presentation of a special plaque in the Avalon Park Community Garden honoring the Dean family’s sacrifice, a speech by Orange County Commissioner Jennifer Thompson and a moment of silence.
Corporal Dean had already fulfilled his enlistment obligation in the Army when he volunteered to extend his enlistment to deploy with younger soldiers who were inexperienced in combat so he could guide them with the knowledge he had gained from his deployment to Iraq in 2008.
“Corporal Deans was one of our own and we want to take just a moment to honor his service, his sacrifice, and his family,” said Beat Kahli, developer of Avalon Park.

Data Transfer Solutions, LLC, celebrates best quarter ever
ORLANDO - Data Transfer Solutions, LLC, (DTS) the Orlando-based firm that provides asset management, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), transportation planning, Web design, database applications, and video and multimedia production services to local governments and regional and state agencies throughout the U.S., reported its 2010 first quarter results rank among the company’s best since its founding in 2004.
A.M. “Trey” Fragala III, AICP, PMP, chief operating officer at Data Transfer Solutions, said the firm was awarded 28 new contracts in the first quarter ending March 31 and formalized 11 agreements called contract vehicles that may result in ongoing work assignments, the largest of which worth a potential $8M over five years.
In the largest single contract executed during the first quarter, DTS is developing unique GIS mapping technology that will help the Texas Forest Service identify forest lands susceptible to wildfire outbreaks. That contract is worth an estimated $360,000, Fragala said.
First quarter revenues grew by more than 28 percent over the same period last year, Fragala said.
“We are now working on more and larger individual projects than ever before,” Fragala said.
“We have established DTS as a dominant provider in several work areas that can substantially reduce the cost of government services just at the time when reducing the cost of government is a critical concern,” he said.
Fragala said DTS plans to expand one division---the firm’s Earth Eye subsidiary, which provides aerial and mobile LiDAR, orthophotography, and precision mapping, and may spin off another division--- as a subsidiary company as well.

Devin Hoey, associate director of the Timber Creek Regiment, located in Avalon Park in East Orlando, said the team – which includes 20 young ladies and one young man – placed second in their semi-final routine and seventh in the Scholastic A Class category comprising the nation’s largest high schools.
“These young people worked very hard to make it to the A Class finals,” Hoey said. “They held fundraisers and car washes throughout the fall semester to earn the money to pay for the trip and they have been practicing almost every day,” he said.
Michael James is designer and choreographer for the Timber Creek High School Regiment, and staff members Stevenson Lumapas, Shannon Jenkinson and Justin Andrade assisted in preparing them along with band directors Rhett Cox and Hoey.

ORLANDO- Avalon Park Elementary School in East Orlando scored 1st among U.S. schools in the Fourth Annual World Maths Day Competition March 3 and placed 2nd and 8th worldwide competing against students from 56,082 schools in 235 countries.
Pamela J. Sanders, principal at Avalon Park Elementary School, said Avalon Park Elementary took First Place in the U.S. and Second Place worldwide in the Ages 5-8 category behind Our Lady of Lourdes Primary School in Leigh-on-Sea, U.K.
Avalon Park Elementary School fifth-graders placed First among U.S. schools and Eighth in worldwide competition against schools in Malaysia, Estonia, the United Arab Emirates, Netherlands and Canada in the Ages 9-13 category.
“Our students really rose to the occasion and all of us are extremely proud of their outstanding performance,” Ms. Sanders said.
According to the World Maths Day web site (www.WorldMathsDay.com), the 2010 World Maths Competition was open to all schools, grades, and individuals ages 5-8, 9-13 and 14-18 worldwide.
The 2010 World Maths Competition pitted students and student teams around the world in live, web-based games of mental arithmetic. Each game lasted 60 seconds and students could play up to 500 games, earning points for each correct answer.
Beat Kähli, who heads Avalon Park Group and built Avalon Park Elementary School five years ago, said the school’s showing in the World Maths Day Competition is a dream come true.
“Avalon Park Elementary School is blessed with outstanding faculty, staff and administrators and the students have responded with an exhibition of world-class math skills,” Kähli said. “This is something all of Central Florida can be proud,” Kähli said.
Participation in the 2010 World Maths Games was up more than 47 percent over 2009, Kähli said.

Avalon Park in East Orlando braces for wave of new development when Innovation Way–S.R. 528 link opens to Medical City
ORLANDO - Avalon Park in east Orlando is bracing for a wave of new commercial development and new jobs when Orange County opens a temporary interchange in May linking the UCF campus and the Innovation Way corridor with S.R. 528, Lake Nona’s Medical City and Orlando International Airport.
Eric Marks, senior vice president and chief operating officer at Avalon Park Group, said Avalon Park is approaching the halfway point of its approved one million square feet of commercial space, and new development resulting from the transportation link could add as much as 550,000 square feet of commercial space at Avalon Park within five to seven years.
“As the middle link between the UCF campus and the UCF College of Medicine, we’re perfectly located to serve both hubs simultaneously,” Marks explained.
“The economic impact in terms of new employment and new development will benefit the entire east Orlando region, and we anticipate an increase in demand within the first year,” he said.
Medical City, which also includes the new V.A. Hospital, Nemours Children’s Hospital and the Burnham Institute for Medical Research, is expected to generate more than 5,000 new jobs over the next five years, including doctors, medical staff, technicians and support workers. Widening Alafaya Trail will begin next June.
Marks said Avalon Park will benefit from two types of commercial users.
“We will see a significant increase in demand for space to serve our existing community,” Marks said. Avalon Park now includes more than 3,500 homes, with a mixed-use downtown district that includes offices, shops and stores, along with condominiums and rental apartments.
“Downtown Avalon Park is a tremendous asset,” Marks said. “The opportunity to walk out of your office building onto a downtown street within a block or two of dozens of restaurants, cafes, shops and stores is very appealing,” he said.
Avalon Park’s equidistance from the UCF campus and Medical City will attract a second group of service businesses and providers that want to serve both markets, Marks added.
“From service businesses such as health care, insurance and legal to primary employers such as software, telecommunications and research and development firms, Avalon Park offers a unique environment,” he said.

Top GIS Software Architects at Data Transfer Solutions Publish Research Article in ESRI ArcUser Journal
ORLANDO - Two top GIS software architects at Data Transfer Solutions, LLC (DTS), headquartered in Orlando’s downtown Avalon Park, were recently published in ESRI ArcUser, the world’s leading journal of the GIS (geographic information systems) and spatial modeling and mapping software industry.
A.M. “Trey” Fragala III, AICP, PMP, chief operating officer at Data Transfer Solutions, said Brian Noyle, senior project manager and software architect at DTS, and David Bouwman, chief technology officer, authored the technical article, Unit Testing for ESRI Developers to teach GIS developers how to engineer software tests before deployment of custom software systems.
“A recent survey showed that only about half of all GIS unit developers write unit tests,” Fragala explained. “Over the life of a custom GIS software project, maintenance costs will equal about half of the project development cost, so testing units beforehand can substantially reduce total project costs,” Fragala said.
Noyle and Bouwman rank among the top software engineers in the GIS industry, Fragala said.
Data Transfer Solutions provides geographic information systems (GIS), transportation planning and engineering, asset management, web design, custom applications development and video and multimedia production services to local governments and regional and state agencies throughout the U.S. The firm has offices in six states.
